creativity+drag and getting life.
Is it me or is everyone forgetting how to reinvent themselves and play dress up for the runway and have fun? I mean I was one to enjoy dress up as a child and being someone new… WHERE IS THE IMAGINATION??????
I was discussing my thoughts on a show called “Face Off” which highlights the journeys of special effects specialists and it made me realize how ballroom can create careers that we never thought of because we see ballroom as simply “something to do” rather than some place to practice.
For example,
- Face Kids can potentially be make-up artists or models for face, hair, jewelry, editorial or catalog.
- Body/Sex Siren Kids can potentially be body builders, trainers, glamour or fitness models.
- Runway Kids can be runway models and/or coaches.
- Performance Kids can be back up dancers and choreographers.
- Fashion Kids can be stylists, designers, wardrobe stylists and fashion forecasters.
- Commentators can be hosts, voice-over actors…
- Bizarre/Bazaar Kids can be set designers, special effects specialists and more…
Why be limited by the confines of ballroom when the world requires your unique and special skills in the real world? Better question: why see the ballroom as a limiting space where the most you can be is a legend in our community when you can use it to grow larger and be a legend in your career field AND an inspiration to our community?
Even those who play the background in ballroom can play a part and use their skills to grow in life… flyer designers can create graphics for television, production djs can become music engineers and don’t forget nail stylists, hair stylists, seamstresses, and even managers… (yes, house parents! If you can control the movements of 30+ members, you can excel as a manager, team leader or project manager in business)
Ultimately, we’ve torn each other down telling ourselves that we were silly or immature for thinking of ballroom more than others when all the while we are cultivating skills and talents that can earn us money, status and happiness in the “real world”.
We can put on our play dresses and have fun now and put on a business suit and have a career later. But, in order to do so, you must present your talent. You must participate. You must see the judges as mere critics to fuel your creative potential to new heights. You have to play drag, be creative and get you life.
See you onthe Runway,
xoxo
